Giving Her Best to Make a Difference

Giving Her Best to Make a Difference

by Bill High

What are you about? Not just a career or a job, but a passion. What drives you to give your best?

I have this friend, Morgan. She’s immensely talented. Photography. Writing. Public speaking. Leadership. Fundraising. She can do it all. If she wanted, I’m quite sure she could command the best jobs in any corporation. The perks, the salary and the stock options would be rich.

But she’s never pursued it. She’s been on a different journey. Life’s trauma. She’s traveled the world and she’s still just 33. But it was on one of the darkest streets in Thailand that she saw children trafficked.

Stop for a moment and consider. These are children—seven, eight, nine years old, who are sold as slaves. They are used for sex. It’s not their choice. They don’t experience the comfort of family loving and protecting them. They are like soiled dishrags to be hung up and dried out without ever getting clean.

I suppose you can see images like that and walk away and try to forget. But not Morgan. She’s invested her life trying to make a difference to make the lives of those children better. It’s complicated and costly, and it’s meant that Morgan’s own life has been filled with more dark images than anyone would choose to experience.

But that’s what happens when you enter the ground of the called—those who give their lives away for the sake of others. Why live this way? Why give your life away when it is so costly?

She says it simply, quoting Gary Haugen of the International Justice Mission:

“The victims of injustice in our world do not need our spasms of passion; they need our long obedience in the same direction—our legs and lungs of endurance…”

Most likely you won’t have the same assignment as Morgan. But her sacrificial work can encourage us in our own callings. Keep your heart open to the good work God has for you to do. Continue faithfully in the work you’ve already been given. Keep loving and giving and serving with creativity and heart.

So we must not get tired of doing good, for we will reap at the proper time if we don’t give up.Therefore, as we have opportunity, we must work for the good of all, especially for those who belong to the household of faith. – Galatians 6:9-10
