How to View Life Through a Generational Lens

How to View Life Through a Generational Lens

by Bill High

How do you view life through a generational lens? That’s different from how our culture views life, and it can make a difference on the legacy you leave for your family.

The Power of a Lens

Without glasses, the world is a blur for many people.

They can make out shapes, colors, and movement, but the details are lost in a fog.

Road signs might as well be abstract art. They can’t tell the difference between 35 mph or 55 mph without lenses.

But every morning, when they slip their glasses into place, the world changes.

Suddenly, what was vague becomes vivid. Edges sharpen. Colors deepen. The dim becomes defined.

That’s the power of a lens.

It’s not just about clarity—it’s about transformation.

Changing the Lens You Use

You’ve probably seen those heartwarming videos of young children receiving glasses for the first time. The way their entire body language shifts is astonishing. Droopy shoulders and vacant stares change to wide eyes, bright smiles, and delighted gasps.

They go from surviving to seeing and from drifting to engaging.

That’s what happens when you change your lens.

But this isn’t just about vision.

It’s about perspective.

The Lens Our Culture Uses

In today’s culture, we often view life through the lens of individualism. Everything is about me—my goals, my career, my family, my happiness. Even something as sacred as marriage or parenthood is often boiled down to how it serves my needs.

It’s the one-act play of self, starring… well, me.

But what if that lens is distorting the view?

There’s another way to see.

A generational lens.

How to View Life Through a Generational Lens

When God spoke to Abraham, He didn’t just promise a personal blessing. He established an everlasting covenant—a legacy designed not just for Abraham, but for his children, grandchildren, and generations to come.

That’s not a self-centered spotlight. That’s a panoramic view.

It’s a challenge to live beyond yourself. To plant trees under whose shade you may never sit.

A generational lens invites us to consider:

  • What legacy am I building?
  • How will my choices today impact my children tomorrow?
  • Am I building a foundation that will outlive me?

This lens requires intention.

It means mentoring not just for the moment, but for the movement.

Loving your family not just to feel loved, but to pass on a legacy of love.

Asking deeper questions to find more meaning.

You’re Invited to View Life Through a Generational Lens

So here’s an invitation: try on a new pair of glasses.

Ask God to let you see not just what’s right in front of you, but what’s beyond you. Beyond this year. Beyond your lifetime.

The shift might just take your breath away.

Because when the blurry becomes clear—when the self-centered becomes legacy-minded—your world will change.

Not just yours.

But the generations after you.

What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?
