Eternity In Our Hearts

Eternity In Our Hearts

Eternity in our hearts – Let’s look at what this means in this excerpt from our upcoming book, “A Legacy Life Devotional.”

Eternity In Our Hearts

“He has also set eternity in the human heart.” Ecclesiastes 3:11

He was one of nineteen children born to witchcraft-practicing parents. He was severely abused as a child. By the age of fifteen, they exiled him to New York to live with his brother. That didn’t last long. He was recruited into a gang where all the rage and anger allowed him to rise to the top. The alcohol, the violence, and the women revolved in an endless cycle of meaninglessness.

Nicky Cruz was running as fast as he could from a life with God. He was arrested many times and was told that his life was hopeless. He
was destined for an early death. His best friend died in his arms.

Nicky hated the nighttime. When all the wars had ceased, and he was alone and quiet, the nightmares came. They were like the relentless reminder of the voices he could not stop. They were a reminder that he was on a certain path to destruction. But they were also the beginnings of the whisper of God that there was something beyond this life.

A skinny country preacher named David Wilkerson brought a simple message of the love of Jesus Christ to the streets of New York, and as much as Nicky fought it, God’s love broke through. In the decades since he was saved, Nicky has shared the gospel with millions of at-risk youth. His story is dramatic, but it’s also like a thousand other stories.

God Puts Eternity In Our Hearts

God’s Word is true: He puts eternity in the human heart. We all have a longing that our lives will be safe, secure, and long-lasting—eternal. But instinctively, whether we have a church background or not, we realize that our lives are not eternal. They are temporal.

Every day, we are faced with the reality that we could exit this planet at any moment. A car accident. A cancer diagnosis. The trouble in our world reminds us that none of us can control the timing of our entry or our exit. We can exercise seven days a week, eat the very best foods, and still die early.

I’m reminded of Jim Fixx, the author of the best-selling book, The Complete Book of Running. At the age of fifty-two, Fixx died while out running.

Our God is a God of order. He builds things to last, not for destruction. God wants our lives to last. He wants the impact of our lives to last for eternity. He wants our families to last and to continue for generations of eternal impact. That’s why He puts eternity in the heart of His people.

In our heart of hearts, we know that there’s nothing in this world that can satisfy. Not fame, power, lands, houses, or great wealth. We all exit to the long tomorrow.

O Lord, thank You that You’ve put eternity in my heart. Thank You for reminding me that there’s nothing in this world that can satisfy. Let me live as an alien and exile on this earth and as a citizen of heaven.
