Generous Wife. Generous Life.

You’ve heard the saying “happy wife, happy life!” But have you ever heard the saying, “generous wife, generous life?”

Not long ago I was on a plane back home with my wife beside me. It was a long flight, the plane was full, and many passengers had taken to snoozing. As a result, when the stewardesses made their way down the aisle, there were many passengers who were not awake to answer the call of “What would you like to drink?”

Next to my wife was one such passenger. He was a rather burly guy and frankly one who looked like peanuts would not satisfy him, let alone a six-ounce drink. But of course that was irrelevant because he’d slipped off to La La Land. He was drinkless. Zippo.

However, when the stewardess actually returned, something must have stirred within his inner soul—or perhaps his thirst gland—and he snapped awake. As the stewardess handed my wife her drink, he had this look of longing. But he remained quiet—apparently willing to accept the fact that he’d missed the drink wagon in favor of his snooze.

Fortunately for him, my wife caught his covetous eye on her drink. Quickly, without thinking, she asked, “Would you like my drink?” As you might expect, he responded with protests: “No, of course not.” She responded with equal protests: “No, it’s really all right. I have a water bottle I can get a drink from.” That little debate lasted for a bit, but I knew what was coming.

I mean, let’s face it. I’ve seen my wife give away more hot entrees, more desserts, more shared drinks, more places in line, more sleepless nights, more “little bites of this or that.” (And I wouldn’t want you to think that I’ve ever been the recipient of any of that—just saying.) The guy was a goner. He took my wife’s drink with an incredulous, “Really?”

And that’s what generosity looks like. It says, “I’ve been blessed.” When we share those blessings with others, it evokes that kind of response—“Really? Who does this?” When you see it in your wife—in your spouse—well, it’s hard not to get caught up in it. In fact, it even makes you want to share part of your ice cream cone too.
